NEWS OF THE DAY
March 30: Dad barracaded the little pen door yesterday. If a skunk got in last night, it will be quite a feat. Tommy says
he's going to shoot the skunk Sat. night. I may have no hens at all by then.
Looks like a sunny day is in store for AV. I may have a chance to paint some of the new room's trim today. I can't spend
too long on that task because I have GED tonight. If I don't rest a bit before going, I will be so tired.
Tommy says if the Billikens win Wed., he and Mike and Patrick will not be down until Sat. morning since there will be another
game Fri. night. Dan, Sarah, and kids are coming Sun. p.m., as is Kt +.
Mrs. Trowbridge does the Easter Egg Hunt at Ste. M. now, so that's a big relief for me.
March 31: March slips away tonight and then we have April. Do you know the origin of April Fools?
Sunny today--hoorah. Now I can paint. I don't have to work tonight, so it doesn't matter how tired I get during the daylight.
No skunk was able to get past the little door yet. I feel sorry that the chickens can't come outside. Maybe I can figure
something out.
Tommy may be setting up a bee hive in the Community Garden at SLU. He has to get permission from someone; his own boss thinks
it's a grand idea. I think the garden is down on the medical campus.
Speaking of bees, some are flying this way in April. Tommy ordered two swarms, so if SLU gets one, we'll get just one. If
SLU doesn't, we'll get two. Mmmmm, can't wait for the most delicious honey. Other honeys pale compared with ours.
April 1, Holy Thursday, First Holy Communion day for 3 children at Ste. Marie. Hello, Everyone: I hope it's another sunny
day, but the dawn hasn't arrived, so I'm not sure.
I finally did most of the trim/eaves on the new room yesterday. Dad had to hold the ladder for me in certain uneven spots.
Just one more side to do by the chicken house, but it's fairly even ground so shouldn't be a caution.
Dad drilled a hole through the garage wall so he can electrify the new room. He bought electrical boxes and switches. He
does need more wire though. It looks really good now. We are so pleased with the outcome of the room. It's so nice, someone
could even live in it, but alas, all of the machines need a place to park.
Lochlan had his first checkup yesterday. He is doing well and now weighs 9lbs. 1 oz. Patrick comes to STL today for his
Easter break. Think he returns to NY on Monday.
April 2: Happy Anniversary to Jerry and Joan. Sorry we have it on events on the wrong date. I'll see if I can fix it.
Good Friday--day of fast and abstinence, i.e., no meat and only one full meal, no eating between meals, just in case you don't
know. When I was growing up there were many such days in the Church calendar. Now it's just Ash Wed. and today.
Dad has most of the electrical work finished in the new room. He was wishing for Tom and Mikey yesterday though, as he gets
tired very easily, especially when up on the ladder. I just stuck in the house yesterday trying to put all of my projects
away. I need a room just for projects. Hmmm, those yard machines may have to move. The little room would be wonderful for
my projects.
April 3: Holy Saturday: Good Morning, Chris and all leave for Florida today. Mike, Tom, Pat came down yesterday with the
canoe Mrs. Riley gave them. They probably will sell the one they bought a couple of years ago. Mike went right down to the
ditch to dig a trench. Tom went to help Dad with the wiring. There seems to be a glitch in it, so they aren't through yet.
Patrick told me all about his "Interview Magazine" shoot. Mike isn't feeling up to par so he didn't stay for the campout.
Patrick and Tommy did.
I hope Easter is sunny. It rained last night but seems to have stopped now--at least for a while. There are scattered clouds
still. I'm sure everything is wet outside. Mike came home about 11:30 and said a skunk crossed in front of the car. It
was coming into our yard. I hope the barracade stopped it from getting my chickens.
April 6: Good Morning, we had a humid, windy day yesterday. There were tornado warnings around STL. It seems the same weather
this morning. It is sunny.
I hope JR is lots better this a.m. Dr. G told him it is lucky he came in yesterday. Somehow men seem to think they can "tough
it out" when illness strikes, but thank goodness they have wives/mothers who insist on a doctor visit.
Dad bought one last piece of insulation for the little room. He bought boards to start on the shelves as well. Today I need
to take rummage sale items to Ste. M. It's also election day, but the only thing on the ballot is school board. It seems
in AV the only ones who vote at all are the relatives of those running, or people who dislike the candidates.
Baby Jane is darling! She has a wonderful disposition. She smiles and smiles and is so comfortable in her surroundings.
She was dressed in a pretty white and pink smocked dress and little pink shoes. Later she changed into a polka dot outfit.
She liked watching Grampa's big goldfish swimming round and round.
